Raising awareness of the challenges and solutions for coastal sustainability and resilience

Since 2007, PAP/RAC and UNEP/MAP, in collaboration with Mediterranean countries, have been celebrating Mediterranean Coast Day on 25th September. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the beauty and fragility of our coasts. This campaign is an invitation to active involvement in protecting our coasts, the sea and their sustainable use. Each year, a different Mediterranean country hosts a central celebration on a specific topic in partnership with PAP/RAC.

In 2022, Morocco celebrated Coast Day, focusing on coastal resilience, as part of the MedProgramme SCCF and Child Project 2.1.

In 2023, in partnership with UNESCO-IHP and PAP/RAC, Coast Day was celebrated in Albania – to shine a light on coastal aquifers – an invaluable treasure hidden beneath our shores.

The 2024 edition of Mediterranean Coast Day was hosted by Algeria. The main celebration focused on women’s achievements in sustainable coastal management.
